About Mannkennd
Mannkennd publishes children's books
about disability diversity
Our mission is to publish a diverse range of children’s books that show disabled children in a positive light - across their strengths and abilities, but also their challenges.
The books emphasize breaking down stereotypes about disabled people and celebrating diversity. We will showcase characters and stories with whom disabled children can identify and from whom non-disabled readers can understand and learn.
Our ultimate goal is to promote knowledge, understanding, and empathy of disabled people in Icelandic society.
Mannkennd derives from the Icelandic words “human” and “empathy”. Our aim is to show the human side of disability to promote empathy.

Our story
The idea for founding Mannkennd is part of our fight for rights for our daughter who is a book worm and started asking if there were books about kids with epilepsy or autism like her. There is a great lack of children's books where the main character is disabled and is shown in a positive light.
We believe there is a great need for such books in the Icelandic children's book market and therefore decided to embark on this journey of translating and publishing high-quality foreign children's books.
